Question on monsters

Postby yipwyg42 » Mon Mar 20, 2006 1:45 am

Am I reading this right. This is a question on the ogre. I do not know if I can actually post his full stats. I will if I find out I can.

Ogre has the following as reference

Combat: Attack +2 (–1 Dex, –1 size), Damage +5 (unarmed), +9
(club), Defense +2 (–1 Dex, –1 size), Initiative –1

He also has a +5 Strength Score,

What would his parry/dodge be. Would it be this

Parry = 10 + 4 (Combat Bonus) + 5 (Str Bonus) - 1 (Size) with a total of 18
Dodge = 10 + 4 (Combat Bonus) - 1 (Dex) -1 (Size) with a total of 12.

Now that this asssumes that they used the warrior as a role option for Combat Bonus.

The Dodge makes sense with the above defense score. It matches what the dodge defense would be.

Do monster's only get the dodge option?

Thanks for any info

Not sure what the official rule call is for this but go with what you like. As you've shown, it's simple enough to figure out the parry defense if needed.

Personally, I would simply go with dodge since I have trouble portraying that Ogre nimbly using that club to parry. Ogres tend to fall in the "Ogre Smash!" category ^_^

Ogre's are cunning fighters in my playbook. Maybe they can't read it, but...

Here's something: Maybe they can't do the 'nimble parry', but how about a rough deflection, batting the attack away? Or a full on 'block', where the stick their massive club in the way of the attack?

I can see Ogres doing that...

Just from my SCA fighting experience, and I'm sure any martial artist can tell you this too, with more experience with fighting, blocking and parrying become second nature, much easier to do.

So, you just might find some "lizard brain" Ogre fighters... :D

I re-read the entry and think I answered my own question. I downloaded it last night and started reading right away, not a good thing to do at 2am when you been up for almost 18 hours. :)

Anyway, the creatures defense score already factors in the Size and Dex bonuses into the equation, so if you decide that they can do the parry option it would be the following

Parry = 10 + 2 (Defense) + 5 (Strength) equaling 17
Dodge = 10 + 2 (Defense) equaling 12

In my previous parry equation I was not factoring in the Dex bonus/penalty. I forgot that Dex goes against your to hit.
