Sea Folk and immersion?

Postby philnicau » Sun Jul 23, 2006 1:49 am

I'm planning a Blue Rose campaign for our Group, and one of the players wishes to play a member of the Sea Folk, but he raised a question i can't find an answer to, it says on page 60 of the Blue Rose book that the Sea Folk must immerse themselves in water daily but not for how long?
i'm guessing that just jumping into a river (or bath) and out again isn't sufficient, but how long is? 1 minute?, 1 hour?
can someone clarify this for me, (i'm currently favouring 1 hour per day).

Haven't read the book enough to know, but I recommend against a one-hour rule for several reasons.

Firstly, it will annoy the player. One hour? That's a lot of game time. People like being inconvenienced by their character's quirks, but not being cut out entirely for hours at a time.

Secondly, it doesn't make any sense. The logic seems to be that, to maintain good health, sea folk need to stay hydrated and keep their gills wet. Once you're soaked, you're soaked. It wouldn't take an hour to get gills wet.

I don't have the book right here, but I seem to recall that seafolk need daily immersion OR have to drink a lot of water. In any case, they don't have gills; they hold their breath like dophins and seals do. The rather short time they can hold their breath supports this.

I think the immersion is to prevent their skin from drying out, in which case a quick dip or long shower should do the trick.

I'd say one full round to get totally soaking wet in total immersion. One full minute in heavy rain, a small waterfall, or with a full wash-basin that isn't deep enough to totally immerse in.

Let's not forget that, while Blue Rose is cleaner than most medeival settings, people still probably don't bathe daily, and even if when they do, they don't do it by total immersion - they take showers or sit in tubs and scrub themselves. Getting a quick dip is still going to be a bit of a big deal, especially when you're on the road.
