Are New Published Settings Interesting?

Postby pawsplay » Thu Aug 25, 2011 5:31 pm

True20 is, in many ways, a do-it-yourself game system, although there have been a number of published settings and variants. Is there any interest for more settings? How many of you might buy a new True20 book?

I have strong world-builder tendencies, so I usually prefer to create my own homebrew settings rather than use published settings. The one significant exception is Freeport, for which I'm a crazed fanboy who's been lucky enough to contribute to the line. :yar:

I would love the opportunity to get more familiar with True20, but I was never able to put together a group for anything beyond a few one-shots. A new, really grabbing, setting might help with that, but it's far from a sure thing. Several of my friends who are fans of Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey, and of Stephanie Pui-Min Law's artwork, bought Blue Rose but nobody ever got a campaign going. And while I own both True20 Freeport books, I've only ever used v.3.0 and v.3.5 for that setting and have no plans to switch.

YMMV. I'm assuming a lot of the old-timers here have had an easier time recruiting players for True20 than I have!

As True20 is something of a toolkitter's system, I imagine that most people homebrew settings. That said, most of the published settings have been good, and helped get the creative juices flowing, even if I didn't directly use them. I think there is still a market for settings, provided they do something different from what's out there.

What would you consider to be the good true20 space opera settings?

While I have not actually played either of them, both Lux Aeternum and Reign of Discordia read well.
If that's pure logic I'll take vanilla.
