[Taern Campaign] Info

Postby natural20 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 6:32 am

I'm going to start my own thread here regarding a project I'm working on in anticipation of the OGL release (discussed here http://www.true20.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 4&start=15 ).

It is a work in progress without formal release dates as of yet but I will be running some GenCon events (on Thursday).

It is a fantasy campaign that will borrow it's feel from books like The Tawny Man Trilogy by Robin Hobb, The Deverry Series by Katherine Kerr, and The Dragonbone Throne by Tad Williams. It will not be a high-magic spellslinging campaign setting but magic will be present. Ancient myths, warring kingdoms, and heroes..that is what Taern will represent.

From a production standpoint it will be more like the original Greyhawk folio which presents a framework vs. providing too many details that make it feel like the setting is not your own (2nd and 3rd edition Forgotten Realms where they had so much information you could get buried).

I'm thinking at this point a 2 booklet (64 pages each) with one book containing the campaign background, deities, movers and shakers for players and another book for the GM with crunchy material. I'm investigating printing companies right now but will also be doing PDF's.

Later,

Good Luck with it!

It certainly sounds like a fun setting.

I agree, it does sound interesting. I'm not familiar with all the works you cite, but I'm getting a traditional, high-fantasy feel from what you've mentioned so far. I'm curious why you've chosen those works as your inspiration and what you hope to borrow from them in your setting. Also, I'm curious what makes your setting a compelling place to game in.

Thanks and best of luck!

I haven't read Deverry, but I can see commonalities between Robin Hobb's Assassin/Liveships/Tawny Man series and Tad Williams, though it's been quiet awhile since I've read the Dragonbone Chair. Both are magical settings without being overtly so. Robin Hobb's setting has at least two forms of magic, the Wit and...something else. The Wit is "natural" magic, and people with the Wit almost invariably bond with an animal companion. The other is seen as a "pure" magic requiring tutoring, very "wizardry" in its feel. They're relatively rare and distrusted.

Just to be pedantic about legalities, I don't think you're not anticipating the OGL release, since True20 has ALWAYS been released under the OGL.

I believe you're anticipating the relaxation of conditions on using the True20 trademark.

Very different thing. I just want to make sure you understand the legalities involved so you don't get into trouble.

Most definitley - although I've seen little movement on the licensing restrictions/OGL release as of yet. I'm very cognizant of the legal implications and am patiently waiting for any update.

Thanks,
